Xinjiang Chartered Car Travel Journal: A Fantastic Journey Across the North and South of the Tianshan Mountains

February 6, 2025

At the turn from winter to spring, I embarked on a journey to Xinjiang, choosing the most liberating way possible—chartered car tourism. Xinjiang, this vast and boundless land, is renowned for its unique natural scenery, rich ethnic culture, and historic relics. I was looking forward to deeply experiencing the charm of this magical land during this trip.

Day 1: First Impressions of UrumqiXinjiang Chartered Car Travel Journal_Xinjiang Chartered Car Travel Guide

In the morning, when the first ray of sunshine pierced through the clouds and illuminated the streets of Urumqi, I was already seated in the chartered car I had booked. The driver was an enthusiastic local from Xinjiang who knew the land like the back of his hand. He warmly introduced me to the overview of Urumqi and recommended several must-see attractions.

We first came to the International Bazaar, which was filled with rich ethnic customs. Colorful handicrafts, fragrant kebabs, melodious folk music… it made me feel like I was in a foreign marketplace. In the Bazaar, I picked out a few exquisite souvenirs to take home as gifts for family and friends.

Day 2: The Ice and Snow Wonderland of Tianshan Tian Chi

On the second day, we drove to Tianshan Tian Chi. As the altitude gradually increased, the scenery outside the window constantly changed. From bustling cities to quiet countryside, to snowy mountains, each scene was refreshing.

When I arrived at Tian Chi, the scene before me was breathtaking. The lake surface was covered with a thick layer of ice, and the sunshine reflecting on the ice surface shimmered brilliantly. The distant snowy mountains, against the backdrop of blue skies and white clouds, appeared even more majestic and splendid. I walked along the lakeside, feeling this tranquility and purity, as if the whole world had come to a standstill.Xinjiang Chartered Car Travel Journal_Xinjiang Chartered Car Travel Guide

Day 3: The Vineyards and Ancient Cities of Turpan

On the third day, we drove to Turpan. Turpan is famous for its hot summers and sweet grapes. Although it was winter now, the vineyards were still green, with some late-ripening grapes hanging on the branches, emitting an inviting aroma.

In Turpan, I also visited Jiaohe Ancient City and Gaochang Ancient City. These two ancient cities witness the long history and splendid culture of Xinjiang. Walking among the ruins, I felt like I could hear the echoes of history and feel that ancientness and vicissitude.

Day 4: The Mysterious Journey of Kanas Lake

In the following days, we drove to Kanas Lake. This was a true adventure journey. As the car wound its way through the mountains, the scenery outside the window constantly changed. From dense forests to open grasslands, to steep mountains, each scene was breathtaking.

When I arrived at Kanas Lake, I was deeply fascinated by the scene before me. The lake water was as green as jade, clear and transparent. The distant mountains were faintly visible in the mist, like a fairyland. I took a boat tour on the lake, feeling this tranquility and mystery. It is said that there is a legend of a ‘water monster’ in Kanas Lake, which added a sense of adventure excitement while enjoying the beautiful scenery.

Day 5: The Tuwa Culture of Hemu Village

After leaving Kanas Lake, we arrived at Hemu Village. This is a well-preserved Tuwa village famous for its unique architectural style and honest folk customs. Walking through the village, I felt like I had traveled back to ancient times. Wooden houses, fences, cows, and sheep… everything seemed so harmonious and peaceful.

In Hemu Village, I participated in a bonfire party of the Tuwa people. Everyone sat around the bonfire, singing and dancing, with laughter and joy constantly echoing. This simple and pure joy made me deeply feel the warmth and hospitality of the people of Xinjiang.

Conclusion

In the blink of an eye, my chartered car tour of Xinjiang is coming to an end. Looking back on these days of the journey, I am filled with emotion. The beautiful scenery, delicious food, and cultural heritage of Xinjiang are all unforgettable. This trip has not only allowed me to appreciate the magnificent scenery of Xinjiang but also deeply felt the profound heritage and infinite charm of this land. I believe that in the future, Xinjiang will surely become one of the most beautiful memories in my heart.
