Modes of transportation:
Airplane: You can first fly to Urumqi Diwopu International Airport and then transfer to a car to Keketohai. Alternatively, you can fly to Altay City or Fuyun County, but flight frequencies may not be as frequent as those to Urumqi. It is advisable to check flight information and book tickets in advance.
Train: Depart from Urumqi and take a train to the Altay Station, then transfer to a coach or taxi to Keketohai.
Self-driving: Depart from Urumqi and proceed along National Highway G216, passing through Colorful Bay, the Karamay Wild蹄类Animal Reserve, Qiakuertu, and Fuyun County, ultimately arriving at Keketohai Town. The total distance is approximately 480 kilometers, with an estimated travel time of 6 to 7 hours. The advantage of self-driving is that you can stop and visit anytime according to your personal interests and needs, and flexibly adjust your itinerary in case of special circumstances.
Coach: Take a coach from the Nianzigou Bus Station in Urumqi to Fuyun County, and then take a special taxi to Keketohai.
Recommended attractions:
Keketohai National Mines Park: Pit No. 3 is one of the most famous attractions in Keketohai and also one of the largest granite pits in the world, with a depth of 200 meters and a width of about 400 meters. It once made tremendous contributions to national construction and now becomes part of the Geological Museum, displaying rich mineral resources and the development history of mining.
Keketohai Town: This town has a long history and was once the living and working place for Soviet experts and skilled workers, filled with exotic charm. Visitors can taste authentic Xinjiang cuisine here and purchase special handicrafts.
Kekesuli: Also known as the Wild Duck Lake, it is a naturally formed marsh wetland with azure and clear lake water, abundant in aquatic plants and animals. Every spring and autumn, large numbers of wild ducks and other waterbirds inhabit and forage here.
Keketohai Lake: At sunset, the lake surface is as calm as a mirror, with sunlight shining through and glittering gold, creating a breathtakingly beautiful scene.
In addition, you can visit attractions such as the Irtysh Grand Canyon and the God’s Bell Mountain to experience the local customs and ethnic flavors.
