The Duku Highway (formerly the Wusun Ancient Road) connects Southern and Northern Xinjiang. Hami and Turpan have historically been the eastern gateways connecting the Silk Road between the East and the West, and therefore, Hami and Turpan are also known as Eastern Xinjiang.?
